In 1994 I released a double mixtape called R.A.W. IS DEAD which featured
90 minute cassette tapes. The main tape was titled R.A.W. Is Dead and the
second one was called Who Wants To Battle. I made them on a TascamÂ
4-track analog cassette recorder fusing together a mix of jungle records
and samples from movies via my Emax II sampler. But, before I made that
now legendary mixtape I made some personal ‘practice’ mixtapes to hear
how the songs sounded played together. I’m now making available on a limited
amount of 90 minute cassettes a tape that was simply titled MAY 1994. It starts off
with a long psychedelic tribal introduction that slowly bleeds into a jungle bassline.
It’s the sound of 1994: trippy, jazzy, deep, intelligent jungle that slowly leads you into
some classic ragga jungle and darkside selections. In this particular mix I also used
an Alesis Midiverb reverb unit to give it the sound of being played within a warehouse.
It is heard mostly in the snappin’ snares as they slap all over this mixtape!
This will be a super limited edition release so if you already have a collection of my
mixtapes going you won’t want to miss out on this one as it was never meant for release
but as some of you might know, those personal mixes come out as some of your best.
For this release I recorded the audio from the original cassette tape into Cubase and
remastered it without losing any of the ‘tape acoustics’ that I personally love. That
hiss never gets old in the intro – it takes me back to the early 90’s when that sound
let you know the mix was about to start and you sat in anticipation for it!
I boosted the bass a bit more as well to make sure this tape bumps no matter where
it’s played or what it’s played on.
So, here we are almost 30 years after I started my journey as a jungle dj in Los Angeles
and I still have the same amount of love for this music and art. I have plenty more tapes
to share with you guys as limited edition releases. Each tape I’m personally duplicating
myself on a Yamaha KX-W421 double cassette player and I’m also sigining my R.A.W.
tag on each tape case to make it just that more memorable for all the collectors out there!
